STRENGTHENING ETHICS in The Workplace

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Location
The 2100 Building
2100 24th Ave. S.,
Seattle WA 98144

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

On a daily basis we learn through the news media about yet another ethical lapse among trusted leaders in business, public service, even ministry. In our own lives (personal and professional) we are continually challenged by dilemmas that raise questions of ethics. Issues of client confidentiality often seem to conflict with codes of professional ethics and legal requirements. Loyalty to friends and colleagues can sometimes be in tension with issues of privacy and professional boundaries. Knowledge of unethical practices in our professional lives confronts us with questions of integrity and responsibility to a common good.

That ethics is an area of increasing attention in our national ethos and our individual workplaces seems to be an understatement. There is a reason. Ethics is about the human community’s ability to trust one another, to rely on one another to live in accordance with shared values. When unethical practices become commonplace such that we are no longer shocked and our sensibilities are dulled, the very fabric that holds our human community together is undermined and in peril.

Is there a difference between professional ethics and personal ethics? Should there be?

This interactive half-day workshop will explore that topic in the context of the following questions:

  • Where do our ethics come from? What is their role in our ability to live and work together?

  • What is the difference between ethics as a framework to guide decision-making and behavior, and ethics as qualities of character that describe a woman or man of integrity, someone we admire as an example and role model for our children?

  • Are ethics different for our work and for our personal lives?

  • How do we make ethical decisions?

    Participants will

  1. Learn what ethics is in the context of the dilemmas that bring this into focus
  2. Understand the relationship between ethics as action-guides and ethics as qualities of character
  3. Identify the foundations and sources of our own ethics
  4. Gain facility with a model for ethical decision-making and an ethical way of living

(This workshop is designed for staff across levels).
