MANAGING CONFLICT within Gracious Space

Thursday, February 22, 2007
9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Location
SAFECO - Jackson Street Center
Suite 200
306 23rd Avenue South
Seattle WA 98144
Tel: 206-545-6111

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This interactive workshop explores the definition of Gracious Space and how Gracious Space can help propel conflict toward creative, positive outcomes rather than destructive ones. The workshop also explores the definition and causes of true conflict, styles for responding to conflict, and an approach to conflict management that is effective, respectful and couched in Gracious Space.

Gracious Space is a remarkably adaptive, foundational concept that can add value to many situations, whether at work in community groups or at home. It is a proven way to create an environment conducive to learning and working well together.

The benefits of Gracious Space are greatest when there is diverse opinion and conflict is likely. Gracious Space aids these situations by diffusing anxiety, fostering trust and by creating ground rules and expectations for engaging in difficult conversations.

PARTICIPANTS WILL:

  1. Learn what Gracious Space is

  2. Practice how to apply Gracious Space to situations of conflict and other difficult conversations

  3. Gain awareness of the characteristics and causes of a true conflict

  4. Identify personal styles and preferred approaches for dealing with stress and conflict

  5. Become familiar with the Five-Star tool for entering into a conflict-based situation and apply it to
a current situation where conflict is present

This workshop is designed for all participants (staff across all levels — frontline, supervisory, managerial, program coordinators, case managers, etc.)
