April 5 Synthesis Group Meeting Notes

Four members members from the full English Content Team responded to our call to get together on April 5th to go over all the ideas generated through the online tool and synthesize them: Sharon Straub from 4-year schools, Ineza Kuceba from 2-year schools and Janet Praxel and Rosemary Fryer from high schools. The facilitator was Terryll Bailey.

The day started with a discussion of how things were going, talking about uses for the definitions, the relationship of the definitions to the GLEs and looking ahead to the June Review Session and steps we might take at the conclusion of this project. This information will be used in designing the upcoming 2-day English Content Team session at the end of the month (April 27-28).

The group carefully reviewed the output of the online tool and then began to go through it definition by definition to look over the comments, suggestions and additions. The group worked hard to include almost every suggestion, and this occurred in a couple of ways:

  1. Re-wording was almost always deemed superior to the language in the original definition, and it was inserted in place of the old language.
  2. Where concepts were deemed to have been omitted, new statements were written.
  3. Deletions due to redundancy were made.
  4. Suggested additions were made either by inserting a concept into an existing definition, or by adding a new one.

Next steps:

  • The Full English Content Team will receive the new and improved list of definitions via the Web site
  • A handout of the current definitions will be created for the April 27-28 session
  • An agenda for the April 27-28 session will be distributed next week.

During the Full Content Team session on April 27-28, a good portion of the first day will focus on the proposed habits of mind and attributes, the relationship to the GLE’s and where we go from here. Following a discussion of these big ideas, the group will jump back into the definitions.
