Speaker Biography: Dr. George B. Vaughan

 

George B. Vaughan is Professor of higher education at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and editor of the Community College Review. His specialty is working with public community colleges in any number of capacities.

Prior to becoming a professor, Vaughan served as a community college president of two community colleges for a total of 17 years.

He was president of Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia, for 11 of those years and president of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, for 6 years. A national study named him one of the 50 most effective community college presidents in the nation. During his tenure as president, he began his scholarly work on community college presidents and trustees, work that he continues today.

He has written over 100 articles and a dozen or so books related primarily to community colleges. His books on the community college presidency have won two national awards. In addition, he received the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) highest leadership award, as well as a number of other national awards. He served on the board of directors of the AACC for three terms.

He has worked with boards, faculty members, and administrators in a number of states. He has engaged in a number of presidential searches and presidential-board retreats. In his current position he teaches a course on the college and university presidency and continues to write and consult.

He received his bachelor's degree in economics from Emory and Henry College, his master’s degree in history from Radford University, did two years of Ph. D. work in history at the University of Tennessee, and received his Ph. D. in higher education from Florida State University. He is married to Peggy Ayers Vaughan; he and Peggy have two sons, Brandt and Andrew, a daughter-in-law, Ruth Johnston Vaughan, and two grandsons, Stafford and Andrew.
