Public institutions have a mission to provide high quality, affordable education. The skyrocketing cost of textbooks, now approaching the cost of tuition and fees for many students, has become an obstacle to that mission. This session will:
- Present a former publishing industry “insiders’ view” on how we arrived at the textbook affordability crisis
- Define “open textbooks”
- Show how open textbooks can reduce out-of-pocket costs for students (and institutions in some cases)
- Demonstrate how open textbooks can improve the quality of instruction while reducing costs
