A1. Creating Equitable Opportunities for Employment: What’s power and privilege got to do with it?

Have you ever asked yourself this question, “Why won’t this client/student take advantage of all the opportunities we provide?” If so, this session is for you. This workshop offers a framework for understanding the role of power, privilege, and oppression in career development. Participants practice applying this framework though a mind-mapping exercise that could also be used with clients/students. This is an opportunity to participate in a dynamic session with a valuable resource - a ReachOut Cultural Competency Toolbook, which highlights foundational research, skill areas, application tools, and additional resources to support continued development.

A2. Dependable Strengths for Educators: Bringing Out the Best in Students

Allen Boivin-Brown, President, Center for Dependable Strengths
How can we help all students recognize their unique strengths and value - that they "count" and have something to contribute whether they are doing well in school or not? The Dependable Strengths Articulation Process (DSAP) is a time-tested process that uses peer-group feedback to help students identify their own excellence. Research at the University of Washington has shown participants in the DSAP also increase their self-esteem, motivation and internal locus of control, as well as gain appreciation and respect for others. Workshop participants will experience highlights of the DSAP to begin identifying their own Dependable Strengths; then be introduced to Dependable Strengths curriculums for elementary, middle, high school and college students. In addition, Dependable Strengths on the Internet (DSi), available to schools, will be demonstrated.

A3. Engagement: The Key to Personalizing and Improving Our Programs

We know that engagement is a critical element in education and workforce development. Because students/customers who do not engage with us are less likely to participate fully in our programs, they are not able to benefit from our services. Lack of engagement also affects our budgets. If people aren’t participating in and completing our programs, financial support can be reduced substantially. Engagement can become an integral part of any organization that serves the public. Participants in this workshop will 1) analyze and discuss the degree of engagement in their organizations and 2) acquire strategies and skills to better engage the students and customers they serve.

How do we meet the challenges of a global economy through public education? The traditional “industrial age” approach to education is not preparing students for college or work in our global economy. Our high school drop-out rates are among the highest of any industrialized nation. More students than ever are taking college entrance exams and those scores show only 20% of students are actually prepared to take college-level classes. Join us as we discuss best-practices, innovative programs and activities to help you move from the 20th century to the 21st.

The Job Magnet System, developed by Dr. Bernard Haldane and refined for over 40 years, is an effective alternative to the traditional job-search approach. This non-traditional method is founded upon the way people really get jobs - through contacts and connections with others, plus the power of "serendipity". It not only enables job seekers to find work faster with less rejection and discouragement but also acquire work they truly enjoy and do well - work that "fits". The Job Magnet System is presently being incorporated by the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and other social service and employment organizations. Participants will learn the basic components of the Job Magnet System.

- You will have the tools and motivation to develop a positive, productive, and happy atmosphere at work and in your personal life.
