Special Issues Series: UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY

Thursday, May 20, 2010
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Location:
The 2100 Building,
2100 24th Avenue S.
Seattle, WA 98144

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This informative and engaging workshop is designed to provide a general understanding of disability through presentations as well as panel discussions by people with disabilities themselves. It will give participants a first hand look at disability related issues whether personal, in the workplace or any other environment.

Workshop Objectives:

  • History and rights of people with disabilities:
learn about the struggles and movements that lead to opportunities available today for people with disabilities.

  • Common experiences of people with disabilities:
obtain knowledge of barriers that exist for people with disabilities by addressing and building awareness of cultural sensitivity to disability, non-apparent/hidden disability, common attitudes, misperceptions and stereotypes about people with disabilities and barriers people with disabilities face (physical, economic, attitudinal)

  • Best Practices: Inclusion, Self-Determination, contribution through Respectful Language, Accessibility and Support

Participants will:

  • Obtain useful tools to better serve people with disabilities.
  • Build greater awareness of disability.
  • Learn how to emphasize the ‘ability’ instead of the disability.
  • Gain understanding that people with disabilities want to be able to be fully participating members of their community and that inclusion no matter what setting, is not a privilege but a right.
  • Receive a disability resource packet.

(This workshop has been designed for all staff.)

PRESENTERS:    STUART PIXLEY, HOPE S.DRUMMOND, LUCILLE G.WALLS

PANELISTS:    ERIC MATTHES, CHARITY RANGER
