Exploring PRIVILEGE and OPPRESSION
and its impact on workplace effectiveness

(REPEAT)

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Location:
Catholic Community Services
RANDOLPH CARTER FAMILY & LEARNING CENTER
100 23rd Avenue South
Seattle WA 98144-2302

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Why should we care about privilege and oppression?  Some individuals, based on factors of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc. have greater and easier access to services and resources.  This also means others have less access.  Inequitable systems, whether intentional or unintentional, impact our ability to effectively serve all individuals.

Are you ready to take the dialogue about diversity and cultural competence to the next level?

This interactive workshop provides participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of critical aspects of privilege and oppression such as internalized dominance, internalized oppression, and intersectionality.

Creating a safe and open dialogue, we explore privilege and oppression through the manifestation of identity, including race/ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender, religion, ability, language, etc.  Through discussion, collective learning and activities, participants have the opportunity to connect the impact of privilege and oppression with workplace effectiveness and share strategies to promote hope and healing.

In addition, participants take home a ReachOut Toolbook, which includes strategies, application tools, and additional resources to support continued growth and understanding of privilege and oppression.

    Participants will be able to:

  • Identify privilege, oppression, internalized dominance, internalized oppression, and intersectionality.
  • Recognize the impact of privilege and oppression on our work.
  • Take concrete steps towards actions that build hope and healing.

(This workshop has been designed for all staff)
