DE-ESCALATION:
Effective Strategies with Aggressive and Mentally Ill Individuals

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Location
The 2100 Building,
2100 24th Ave. S.,
Seattle WA 98144

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Our society is becoming increasingly violent, and sadly, aggressive and mentally ill individuals are not immune to this trend. With substance abuse and poverty compounding problems, agencies must become increasingly concerned to assist their employees in maintaining their own safety. Aggressive behavior often occurs with no advanced warning. It can occur in a client’s home, out on the street, or in an agency office.

This workshop will help participants understand the different levels and types of aggression. Participants will then learn and practice different approaches to effectively diffuse aggressive situations and communicate with aggressive customers and/or co-workers.

    Participants will gain:

  • verbal de-escalation techniques
  • use of spacing, stance, the eyes and voice to calm an individual or establish control
  • how to establish lines of communication with the aggressive / mentally ill
  • control of oneself – (the heart of any successful de-escalation strategy).

“The knowledge and skills gained from this training increased my awareness of behaviors of aggression and methods to de-escalate more effectively”

“Great workshop! – very engaging, excellent trainer – vital information”
