Martin Bean, General Manager, Education Products Group, Microsoft Corporation
Martin Bean is responsible for driving Microsoft’s all up strategy for education spanning primary, secondary, tertiary and lifelong learning. In this informative and provocative presentation, Martin will explore the changing nature of the global economy and the impact that it has on education and workforce development. Martin will present Microsoft’s latest thinking around the impact technology is having on the way people want and need to learn and the impact technology is having in both their digital work style and lifestyle. Martin will challenge participants to think about how their organizations will need to adapt if they are to be successful serving the needs of the “Net Generation” and their employers. Topics to be covered include:

A. Teaching and Learning in Virtual Worlds: an Introduction to Second Life

Second Life is a free, online 3-D virtual world imagined, created and owned by its residents. This workshop will introduce participants to Second Life and provide some background and history to the fascinating work currently being done in virtual worlds. We will also look at some best practices and examples of effective teaching in virtual spaces. John Miller’s work in the virtual cardiac unit simulation will be featured.
